Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Rwy (SCMB)
Title:  Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Rwy (SCMB)
Description:  The entire SC&MB roster is shut down on Memorial Day. The rails were really rusty, making me wonder if they have been shut down for a while. Only cars on the line were storage tank cars.

Riverport RR (RVPR)
Title:  Riverport RR (RVPR)
Description:  Luck-I arrived at their enginehouse just in time to see the only crew coming back from switching the car storage yard. Turns out 4029 is the last RS4TC running-2 others are sold, the other blew its engine and is stored in the house. The ubiquitous EMDs are looming...

Hudson Terminal Rail (HTR)
Title:  Hudson Terminal Rail (HTR)
Description:  HTR is a quasi-common carrier (probably a contract carrier) that runs a big mash of yard tracks outside of Hudson. I showed up on a Sunday, hoping to get a telephoto shot of their power. To my massive surprise, they were running, and with Alco S1 #646. I had planned on staying a short time before getting back on the road, but instead was there several hours. I still had the remaining drive back to KC, and I arrived way late that night. Worth it!

The GE vs. the High Line
Title:  The GE vs. the High Line
Description:  Here we have the North Louisiana & Arkansas, or what was left of it. On a trip to Baton Rouge, we followed the NLA for its whole length. Only active engine was this Army retiree, and only cars were the string on the steep lead to the Port. Not real sure what to say on this one...

Strasburg (SRC) freight-original shortline
Title:  Strasburg (SRC) freight-original shortline
Description:  Its easy to forget that the Strasburg is still a Class 3 shoptline, hauling freight. On my one visit there, I managed to catch a freigth move, switching out plastic pellet hoppers. What you can't see is the SRC GE 44 tonner is actually pxshing at the rear, and old #1 is being used as a switching platform by the conductor.

MILW 489
Title:  MILW 489
Description:  For years after the merger into Soo Line, MILW 489 kept going in the Twin Cities in full Milw paint, long after the other units had been turned into 'bandits'. Word amoungst RR crews was that the local ex Milw guys just made sure that 489 never made it to the paint shop. This was shot thru the all-weather window of our second unit, an SD18, while on train MKSSA.

Last look at the North Western
Title:  Last look at the North Western
Description:  Moorland was the site of an out of the way junction between a former CNW secondary main and a couple of branchlines. For some reason, unpatched CNW equipment kept ruling Moorland past the UP merger. This picture is significant to me because it was the last time I ever saw an unpatched original CNW engine still in service. When I stopped to shoot this, I had no idea it would be the last. Battered workhorse 6847 in all its North Western glory, complete with a smiley face on the front bell, wrapped up my former employer for me.

The CB yard job
Title:  The CB yard job
Description:  Here's the story. The IAIS road train behind 4 EMDs, brought in 96 cars, and dropped them on the main. 900 tied on and proceeded to pull the entire train through the yard, and yard it from the north end. Run 8 action past the engine house.

The Davenport of Buffalo
Title:  The Davenport of Buffalo
Description:  Believe it or not, this was a running engine, regularly used. This 35 ton Davenport was used weekly to pull loaded grain hoppers through the dumper. Who needs a coupler on the front when you're only using the back? Reengined with a skid mounted Cat engine, you can see the new radiator through the front. A great little beast, working only a few miles from its birthplace.
